What Is a Frenectomy?
Frenulums are the connective tissues that attach one part of the mouth to the other. The lingual frenum connects the tongue to the bottom of the mouth and the labial frenum connects the lips to the gum above the top two front teeth.
Frenectomies are most commonly performed on the lingual frenum. Some patients are born with a frenum that is too short or thick which inhibits their tongue’s range of motion. When this is the case, we utilize advanced, CO2 tissue lasers to loosen the frenum in a quick, easy procedure called a frenectomy.
Tongue-Tie in Newborns
Tongue-tie in newborns is actually fairly common. It happens when a newborn’s frenulum (the tie between their tongue and the floor of their mouth) restricts their tongue’s range of motion. This can lead to a variety of issues when it comes to breastfeeding, speaking, and swallowing. Common symptoms of tongue-tie are:
- Difficulty Lifting Tongue to Upper Teeth & Side to Side
- Heart-Shaped, Notched Tongue When Stuck Out
- Trouble Breastfeeding
